Prada boss a devil?

I went to see the movie ‘The Devil wears Prada’ this weekend and it instantly reminded me of the fashion woes I experienced when I first entered the work force right after college.

I had to trade in my comfortable jeans and t-shirts for power suits and pumps. I was even shocked that I couldn’t get away with flip-flops on casual Friday (who came up with that rule????).

After three years in a corporate environment, I think I have finally managed to dress appropriately depending on my work schedule and still allow my personality to come through.

Luckily, I have never been scolded about my fashion sense and haven’t had a grouchy boss but this Access Atlanta story points out a few examples of demanding bosses.

Unlike Ann Hathaway’s character in the movie Andy Sachs, most of us don’t have a fashion magazine’s clothing department to dive into so we can look trendy.

Not everyone can afford the best designer clothes, have you found any cost effective solutions? Are you good at finding bargains on a budget?

Here are some pointers to help you dress to impress your devil boss!

Do you still struggle to adhere to your office’s dress code? Have you ever been reprimanded by your boss for dressing too plainly or for being to glamorous?

Do you feel like you always have to keep up with your fashionable boss just to please him or her?

I once had a supervisor who made rude comments to the rest of us in the office regarding our appearance on almost a daily basis.

Funny thing is, she wore her obviously fake blond, short hair up on top of her hair plastered with hair spray so it wouldn’t move, wore as much make-up as Tammy Faye with a clear line of demarkation just below the jaw line and had a really stuffy wardrobe.

However, she would constantly comment to the rest of us. She didn’t like our hairstyles, we didn’t wear enough makeup, our pantyhose looked cheap, the heals on our shoes were too high (or too low), our skirts were too high (or too low), our clothes wasn’t trendy enough, she didn’t like the color of our nail polish, our nails were too long (or too short), etc. Funny thing is, you could walk in the office in the exact same skirt two weeks in a row and one week she would say it was too short and the next week she would say it was too long. Ditto on how high our heel were or how long our nails were.

There were 4 positions in that office location - the supervisor and 3 worker bees. In the 1 1/2 years I stuck it out, 8 people rotated through one of the other positions and 4 or 5 people rotated through the other one.

I get told all the time by my female co-workers how easy I have it when it comes to dressing because I’m a guy. I guess in a way, they’re right. My standard work “uniform” is a pair of khakis, some oxfords or monk strap shoes and a polo shirt or button-down oxford. Pretty predictable and easy.

However, I do work with some rather frumpy dressing women, so by comparison I end up looking like a fashion plate instead of just some guy wearing khakis and a polo. Today, one girl is wearing flip-flops and shorts, and another is wearing a cut-up t-shirt with culottes (!) and some red Mary Jane’s.

Wretch.
