The writing on the wall….
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Your boss is on the line and her voice is very tense. She wants to see you in her office right away.
Your palms clam up right away as you head over there. She delivers a bee sting.
She tells you that wrote you up because you had a disagreement with one of your coworkers.
You didn’t tell her about this because you thought it would all blow over.
Should she have listened to your side of the story first and dealt with the problem in a more subtle manner?
Have you ever been written up at work? Was the issue about a major problem or minor incident?
What happened next? Did you miss the writing on the wall?

I was actually written up last year for a small misunderstanding between myself and an assistant in our office.
The assistant squealed to her boss who has been bedding my boss so I was in double trouble!
Now this is in my file forever and it was all just over office supplies…of all the things!

In a perfect world, there would be a verbal warning issued first. I worked for an outfit that supposedly had that policy, verbal, then written and finally discplinary action up to and including dismissal. My supervisor wrote me up once for something that was totally a misunderstanding on his part. He was quite hostile about it, such that I lost my sense of reasoning. Had I not lost it, I would have refused to sign the document and instead taken it up with the HR department that he had not followed the company policy. Needless to say, I immediately began a search for a position with another company and am now much better off.

My advice to managers is to be careful when it comes to writing staff up.
While I believe it’s good to document everything, I am stuck in HR hell right now with an untrustworthy employee while things are battled out!
