When your arch-rival becomes your boss

We’ve all watched one of the toughest fights in recent history for the Democratic presidential nomination. As the battle continued to heat up, one of the questions that kept coming up was whether Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton would agree to be vice president if the other one clinched the presidential nomination. Now that Obama has secured the Democratic nomination, we shall see if a “dream team” will be created or if the bitter battle for the nomination destroyed any hopes of an Obama-Clinton ticket.

This collision of bruised egos and bad blood is not limited to those running for president. Have you ever competed with a co-worker for a position you desperately wanted only to lose and find your rival now has become your boss? Or what about the opposite- did you secure a enviable position within your company after a contentious battle with a fellow employee and now find yourself their superior? No doubt you were expected to put aside any differences and work as a strong team together. What were the results?

When your Rival becomes your Boss - leave. It’s easier to go somewhere else and become the big fish that to tolerate the never ending abuse that will follow. Humans were born evil and cruel. This scenario is where you will be destroyed along with your family, friends, career, personal health, and financial stability. Leave, leave, leave …

Actually Dave, I don’t believe that we’re born evil and cruel. I believe that we start out quite innocent, but our parents and upbringing create what it is we become as adults. Agree with the leaving part. Too much animosity and bad feelings will created too much of a strain for the team.

This happened to me a few years ago. Because TPTB were afraid I wouldn’t stay at the organization long term, they brought in someone with no experience and gave her the promotion that was rightfully mine (since I had been doing the work of the position anyway just without benefit of the better title and higher salary). And expected me to train her. That lasted less than a month before I was able to find another job and leave. The joke was on them, though. The girl they hired ended up leaving after just one year on the job. So much for hiring someone who would stay! Karma will get you in the end.

Sometimes there are just bad chemical mixes and No AMOUNT of pasting it over is going to fix it. You can try all you want, but eventually the stress will kill you. If you complain, those in charge will think you have a ‘bad attitude’. The best thing to do is act totally professional. Document your work and look for another position. I’d start looking on the first day. The stress is not worth it and eventually you will have to leave one way or another.

Obama would be boss of VP Hillary if she becomes VP on his favor. As per the rules of the Democratic Party, Hillary and her supporters have the right and the means to make her the VP nominee without burdening Obama. It just takes 300 pledged delegates of Hillary and herself to put her as the VP nominee. See VIII C.6 of the party rule.

In this historic contest actually there are two winners: Obama and Hillary. Both win their place in the Democratic ticket by virtue of their performance.

If we need a supportive boss to survive, there would be few survivors. A boss has only so much influence on the mental attitude of the subordinate. A ‘never-lose’ subordinate does not get stymied by opposition.

Let us not forget that as VP Hillary could tip the scales by her casting vote. So the P is not necessarily the boss of the VP.

Leave. It’s the best for all involved. They “boss’ won’t have to pull out their knives and you will avoid getting them in the back. If Obama picks Hillary as his V.P., he will be dead within a year. There is no end to that woman’s ambitions. Just ask Vince Foster.
