Do you have a good boss?

In honor of today being National Boss day, let’s talk about what makes a good boss. Some common traits of good bosses includes the ability to communicate effectively, showing respect for employees and clients, and engaging the staff fully.

Do you have a good boss? For those that supervise others and manage companies, what characteristics do you think are essential in order to be successful?

And for those that don’t like their bosses, according to a recent Adecco survey, it sounds like most of them wouldn’t take their bosses job if it were offered to them. Would you?

I love my bosses!!! They are so fun to work with - they do not put any pressure on me and they treat me very good! I am blessed beyond belief to have them in my life.

I have a great boss. He is thoughful, respectful, funny, outgoing, and yet firm. We are rewarded for the good jobs we do. I guess you could say, he even spoils us. I don’t hate getting up in the mornings for work, like previous jobs. I wish all bosses could be this way. Keep up the good job and Thanks!

I have a very good boss who treats me with respect, appreciates the good things I do, and is fair and honest when I mess up. Needless to say, I bought him lunch for bosses day.

I’ve had some real loooooosers for bosses in the past. One was, literally, a criminal who would coach his employees to lie to customers (computer broker).

Another boss was such a micro-manager that he would sneak around the corner to see what I was working on, listen in to my phone calls, etc.

He would actually pass notes to me during meetings to order me to stop talking if it was a topic he didn’t like. This was a professional IT position at a fortune 100 company.

I feel the same about my bosses as Sherry and Thankful.

I have had a boss that was like one Ima Nidiot mentions…the owner/boss asssigned your passwords and then gave them to the IT guys to set up. And you had to have written permission from the owner to change your password on your computer. He would log into your computer and watch everything you did while you did it. He also would log in as you and make it look like you screwed up. This is true because I proved I didn’t delete a file they said I did in the database. The time stamp, which was accurate, stated that at the time this file/email was deleted, I was outside smoking, taking my 15 minute break, getting test results from my daughters doctor. Yeah when I called the owner out on it, I was written up for doing my job by the approved policies and fired. He also would not allow topics talked about during meetings that he didn’t want to discuss, but he didn’t send a note, he would say we are not discussing it and tell us to move on or we were written up.

My favorite boss was an attractive lady about ten years older than me when I graduated from college. We had an affair for about five years. It lasted through two of her husbands, and produced a love child. Those were the best of times.

I would like to say I have one of the best bosses ever. He trusts me to do my job, never looking over my shoulder and I do my job correctly to ensure he never has to in the future. Whenever I’ve had any kind of work related issue and it was brought to his attention, the issue was resolved by the next day. Any work related request I’ve asked of him is always approved and overall he is just a good guy. He is friendly, yet still professional, honest, and if needed he will tell you fairly when you have messed up. Before this job I too used to hate waking up in the morning and going to work. With this job, which I have been working for 3 years, I have never felt that way even once. I am so thankful to have this great job, and such a great boss.

My boss is the greatest.

She wears mini-skirts and then, calls me into her office for some “special” discipline sessions. She just called me and said come quick, she’s been naughty and needs a spanking. Wow, to think that I almost quit before her husband mysteriously passed away.

I would like to say I actually like my boss now. 3 months ago I couldn’t say that because I was working under someone else. My boss is a laid back person who I can share a laugh with. If I need to call out sick I don’t have to lie I just tell him I need a break. I don’t have him watching everything I do. I actually get praise for the good things I do. I don’t get called into the office every day for stupid stuff. If he sees I am struggling he will help out. It also helps that we are both generation X’s and my ex boss was a baby boomer who had it her way or no way. Overall I am happy to get up at 5 every morning and come to work. I hope to be at my company for couple of more years.

I would like to comment on my former boss. I quit after working for this man for 7 years. He didn’t want me taking vacations, so in 7 years I only took one, 1 week vacation, for the next 6 years I would take 3-4 day weekends for my vacations. He was the cheapest person on the planet, a hypocrite, claimed to be a man of God (NOT), never told me I did a good job because (to quote him) “you might want more money”. The man made over $500,000 per year, I was his only employee and the most I ever got for a Christmas bonus was $100.00! I stayed with him so long, because he was hardly ever there, ( I ran his company so I did not have to deal with him on a day to day basis) I could go on for pages, but the icing on the cake was…….are you ready for this??????? After losing my sister to Cancer on a Saturday, he called me on Tuesday, the day of the FUNERAL, and wanted me to come in to work. Again, to quote him, “She passed away on Saturday, it’s Tuesday already!” I went in the next day, told him I can no longer work for a person I don’t respect, packed up my things and now work for the best boss on the planet.

I worked at a printing company for 13 years. I became pregnant at 39. One day when I went to my regular appointment, (mind you through my entire pregnancy I did not miss not one day of work & on the days of my appointments I went into work at 6:00 am so that I could at least get my eight hours in)I went to him & told him that the doctors said that with my history, I would probably deliver early & that they were worried about my stress level. He told me that he was stressed too & walked off. I said, “Not Yet”. A week later while I was at work my water started leaking & I was put into the hospital that morning. I had gone in at 6:00 that morning. After my baby was born I took 7 weeks off, after the 2nd week they called to see when I would be back & I told them I didn’t know, but in the mean time I was looking for another job & got it the week I returned to my old job. Now I’m at job that I really love, my boss is very generous, easy going, fun to talk to. I wouldn’t ask for a better person. HE’S GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

My Boss is the best. He uunderstands what I do, and the value it provides. He understands the challenges and appreciates the triumphs. he is fair, and he is a friend who expects the best from everyone. He is not a “ladder climber” who is afraid to make his employees better for fear of them passing him, but instead challenges us all to be innovative problem solvers who are not limited by the ego of a control freak, who always has to say “yes”. My boss will respectfully diagree and fight for what is right, and has always had and will always have the repect and admiration of everyone he comes in contact with. He truly makes everyday a great day. No one could ask for any more. I consider his guidance and leadership a very large perk of my job.

I am a boss and did not realize it was Bosses Day until my Grady Employees suprised me with a gift and card. All my employees are special to me. I get to know them, along with their Kids, wife’s or husbands. I believe in treating them the way I would want to be supervised, give me my assignment, let me do it, and hold me accountable if I don’t. We as leaders have to remember that our employees are doing the work, RESPECT IS EARNED, and the person you supervise may be YOUR BOSS one day !

I have had 3 great bosses in the past 10 years and I am currently working for one of the 3 now and have worked for her for almost 4 years now. The thing that makes her one of the best for me is that she’s honest, fair and she respects me as her assistant and her entire team feeds off that and it makes it easy for me to support her and we’re friends as well. We are a team and I have gone w/ her to 2 places and as long as she needs an assistant she and I will always be a team.

my boss is a nice man, but a questionable boss. he likes to hire all his friends. he doesn’t really give much positive response, so you’re left to wonder whether you are doing a good job or not. on performance reviews, he minimally notes the good and elaborates on what he sees as bad, which is usually something minor. it’s difficult to get excited about showing up for work every morning.

I had the worst boss ever. She basically hired me and gave me no insight into what she wanted. I was put me in a dirty cube that was full of other departments files, a mini fridge, and a computer that looked like someone spilt a bowl of soup on the key board. For office supplies, I was told to go find them from empty cubes. The final break came when I took a few days off to go visit my Dad in the hospital - a few days after I came back, the old hag brought me into her office to yell at me for not being as engaged. Thank God that job is over, and I don’t have to see that shrivelled old troll again.

The lesson I learned from this was to get out of debt and never be in the position to have to take this sh1t again. Also, should I ever get a terminal illness - she is on my list of people to kill before I die.

I am so lucky to have a wonderful boss. My “old” boss retired a few months ago and I didn’t realize what a negative environment I was in until my new boss started. He makes our workplace a happier place to work. He is a breath of fresh air. I am truly blessed.

One of the best bosses I ever had retired on the 1st this month. Her best feature was her sense of humor, realizing the absurdity of most challenges at work. She wasn’t afraid of anybody (except the CEO) and was a roaring lioness unless the much-hated CEO was present, then she was like a little mouse, with no even a little sqeak. She reigned in middle management for 34 years, so persistance matters, and being quiet at the right time.

I have a great boss. I left his company in 2001 and returned in 2007 would have come back sooner but had to wait to be vested in the company’s 401 contribution on my behalf. I had two different bosses at the job between 01 and 07. Neither was as good of a boss as the one I have now. The first one had a hard time acknowledging when anyone did a good job, he’d tell others but not the person who did the job. He was kind of paranoid and we all griped about him. I used to tell them he’s got his problems but be careful what we wish for and sure enough he left and here comes the new guy. He didn’t know his you know what from a hole in the ground. He was brought in as an adjuster in charge (what a title, huh?) and he’d only been handling claims for 2 years. He didn’t want to do his part of the claims handling, knew we were understaffed even when he was handling claims but it made no difference to him, he was too busy to handle claims. To this day I don’t know (nor does anyone else still working there) what he was busy doing. He sucked as a boss and the sad thing is that he is a minority and told a friend of mine (who is also a minority and not an employee there) that the higher ups were going to let him do what he wanted as they had to “keep a ni…. happy”. He’s going to run the company into the ground but hey I’m outta there anyway so no biggie. Enough about him, the boss I have now respects, acknowledges good work, pitches in and is an all around good guy and might I mention also a minority. Goes to show you that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I’m also a huge fan of what goes around comes around and not only will the “adjuster in charge” get whats coming but so will the company that’s letting him do it.

I wish my boss was “hardly ever here.” The first year I started working at this place I won’t go through the trouble of naming, was alright. Then I started seeing my boss for the person he really is. Unfortunately after 2.5 years, I am still here. Luckily, most of the time he arrives after 12PM, so I have the majority of the afternoon to be in his gracious presence. Since this is boss’ day, I won’t even bother to discuss my only co-worker who racks my nerves on a weekly basis. When I think about my life here now and the way it has been over the last several months, I feel as though working at this place makes me not want to work anymore period; like I just want to sit at home and do nothing.

Currently I have a horrible boss that is an incompetent micromanager. The best boss I ever had truly cared about her employees. She allowed us to work our schedule around school; she rewarded us whenever we did well; she always publicly gave us credit for our work; she empowered us to do our jobs; she organized social events; she gave us quarterly questionnaires to find out how we were doing and what could be improved on in the bank branch we worked in; she gave us personal gifts that she new would mean something to each individual; she believed in promoting her employees and giving them work that they would be the best in;she didn’t write people up for mistakes that she knew she could have done; she always stated there was nothing in the bank that could not be fixed. Wow, I could go on and on. I wish there were more managers like her.

I have not liked any of my bosses on a “personal” level since I graduated college. I found that bigger boys=bigger toys and losers that manipulate the little guy at work. But I don’t like brown nosers so I make it a point to be nice but not too nice.
