If you could be an intern …

While most of us have heard of the midlife crisis, how many have heard of the midlife internship? It’s also known as the midcareer and the adult internship, because people of all ages beyond the traditional college years are exploring career options through a usually unpaid, or low-paid temporary position. For those with current full-time jobs, it can be a safe way to explore a new industry or profession. For others who find themselves suddenly unemployed, it can be an attempt at jump-starting their career paths.

There are plenty of success stories about midcareer internships, but one should realize that taking on an internship later in life may not be as an exciting of an adventure as when you were a carefree co-ed. If you have a full-time job on top of the internship, you will have to sacrifice time away from family and friends, and the no or low-paying gig won’t put much of a dent in those hefty mortgage and car payments, nor does it come with health insurance benefits.

If I could be an intern now (I’m in my first year as a Criminal Justice major), I’d want to intern with a private Investigator’s Office.

I’d move to Washington and do the president. It comes with lots of perks and now, it’s a personal thang ya know..

I would like to intern for a large meat producer like Hormell or Swift and learn how to efficiently kill livestock. I think it would be a blast just killing cow after cow all day long, and then moving to pigs and chickens throughout my three months.

Actually I am a mid-life intern. I intern for V-103/WAOK which is owned by CBS radio. I work in the news department. I also get to meet the DJs and see the guest of the station. I intern at night and in the daytime I am a system support analyst for a company that does payroll, benefits and HR for other companies. I went to CSB school of broadcasting and I am hoping to get a job in TV or radio. I am in my 40s and I think I was the oldest person in my class. I just finished school in July and I am doing better than some of my younger classmates that applied for the internship and did not get it. I would say don’t be afraid to try.

If I didn’t have regular bills to pay, here are my choices:

  • NPR radio in D.C. (unpaid)
  • TimeWarner, Atlanta (unpaid)
  • Americorps/PeaceCorps (not really internship, but service orgs that have living stipends, not reg full-time pay)

I am interested in interning/ a starting position at v 103/WAOK. EJ, how do I go about my interest? I would work a full time position hopefully. I am graduating from Boston College with my B.A. in English and Communication. I am relocating to Atlanta in a few months. Are there any starting positions?
