Are you calling in gay to work today?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Today, across the nation, a movement called Day Without a Gay will be taking place. Organizers want anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, who is seeking to protest anti-gay legislation to call in “gay” to work, and take the day off from their regular jobs to go perform volunteer or community service. Organizers hope this will be a positive and peaceful way to demonstrate the impact that gay people and their supporters have on the nation’s economy.
Of course, economic boycotts are nothing new. African-American community organizers led a blackout in November 2007 to protest injustice in the legal system, with cases like the Jena Six and Genarlow Wilson grabbing the headlines at the time.
If you are participating in this movement, you can use Do Good as a resource for nonprofits and charity organizations in Atlanta. For those that fear losing their job but still want to support the cause, you are encouraged to wear a white knot.
So are you participating in Day Without a Gay? Do you think these types of economic boycotts have any lasting impact?

I for one am tired of hearing about one group or another wanting special priviledges!! The voters in California said NO to gay marriage. End of issue, shut up and let us live our lives without your nonsense cluttering up the landscape. Life is tough, wear a crash helmet. Quit crying and start living your lives!!

Do economic boycotts work? No. It doesn’t work in blue-collar postitions with a strike and it doesn’t work with a one day boycott by some group trying to prove a point.
Plus it seems like half of the gay community is in entertainment or polititcs these days, and we could afford to drop a few people from each of those areas.
Just another senseless protest by a group of people who already get way too much special treatment nowadays as it is.

To “Gaybasher” and “Really…again?”: What special priviledges do you think they want? What special treatment do you think they get? Remember, your use of the word SPECIAL indicates that you think they want priviledges that others don’t want, and treatment that others don’t get. Please, tell us all what you are referring to. Tell us what special priviledges they want that you don’t have or want, and what special treatment they get that you don’t get.

Marrage is between a man and a woman. That’s why God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Adam or Eve and Eve! Sexual parts don’t fit together other than for a man and woman and only a man and woman can produce offspring. Homosexuality is a choice in life! If you feel like a woman trapped in a man’s body maybe it’s because you are a perverted, sick individual just like a child molester. Maybe you should go to church and read your Bible and pray to God for help instead of giving in to sin and the perversions of homosexuality! If you think Homosexuality and Gay are the cool thing to be, I would hate to be in your shoes on judgement day!

gays comprise the most diverse minority on the planet. they have been around just as long as all mankind, in every culture.
this whole non-acceptance deal is part of a religo-political movement started back in the day by a dying roman empororer who wanted to make sure he got in good with jesus before he died.
if i was gay i would prolly call in today. since i’m not, all i can do is continue to support my gay friends just as much as all my friends - if not more because come on, they’re gonna be singled out more than any other minority soley based on their emotional and/or physical attachments to another person.
i think it’s perverted that people care so much about out gays and who they want to sleep with. get your pretend-morally correct mind of the gutter you homophobes.

It was only a matter of time before the Neanderthals like BC came out of the woodwork. Such ignorance is why gays have to resort to measures like this boycott. Homosexuality is not a lifestyle choice. Why would anyone “choose” to be gay if it means being discriminated against in all aspects of life. Get with the 21st century BC!

The voters of California voted NO to Prop 8. What about the simple word NO do you not understand. I voted for McCain for President but his suporters are not out protesting against Obama. The people have spoken. Marriage is defined as a covenant between a Man and a Woman. If the gays want civil unions, so be it, but Marriage is already defined. End of story, so let’s move on.

What we need now is to get this country on the right track from an economic standpoint. You want to take a day off? Fine. You want to be gay? Whatever. If you want to be treated like everyone else, quit whining and go to work and do your very best every day. Help this country out. Right now there are 50 people standing outside your office who will start tomorrow for 25% less pay. Think about it.

BC, is that why people strap bombs to themselves and blow themselves up because of God? Think about what you are saying. Perhaps you can’t think? People like you present God as an egomaniacal, hateful, vengeful, blood thirsty, insecure bigot. Get over yourself already. When people stop seeing gays as a walking sex act or a “lifestyle” and start seeing them as whole human beings then maybe progress will be made. Why we never hear lifestyle being applied to a person who is heterosexual. Is there such a thing as a heterosexual lifestyle? What does that mean?

I read also they want folks to take money out of bank accounts to show the numbers but really who has any money to take out of the bank? California is a state that had a vote and they said NO so the people did speak. What is sad here is civil rights should have been first and then this marriage stuff. I for one would like to see the law state once married no divorce until you complete a year of counseling to try to save the marriage. The divorce rate is over 50% so it is not a sacred vow but just a money making factory. IF divorce were no longer an option then it would force people to consider marriage for what it should be a lifetime long vow with no way out ever! Divorce should only be allowed if one is raped, beaten to near death or fraud. Other than that you shoud not be allowed to divorce. If I were a divorce judge I would force counseling since most people do not even really know the person they marry. Just sad all around. Calling out of work only hurts the production for your entire company and team and is a poor attitude.

I oppoese gay marriage, but support unions if that what some want to do. I believe that it’s okay for a gay couple to adopt if they’re fit to be parents. I’ve witnessed a gay household and they raised their kid to be who they were, and that kid was straight but loved his parents (both men).
I’m not ignorant, and I don’t believe in bashing or making fun. I was at a christian concert the other night, and a few guys walked past us, and yes they were gay, and one yelled out “Jesus isn’t with us tonight because we’re gay.” How sad for him to have to say that. If people voted for banning Prop 8 than why should that be different than any other vote we have here in America? It got approved…that’s it!!!

The “people have spoken” argument is not a good one and demonstrates historical ignorance. Imagine if instead of a Supreme Court decision (Brown v. Board of Education), we had just had “the people speak”.
The constitution protects minorities against majorities thankfully.
Should have never been a vote. Instead, courts should hear evidence from either side.
On one side, it could clearly be shown that someone’s right to the pursuit of happiness is being denied. On the other, “Jesus don’t like gays” could be presented.

To all the gay folks…if you don’t want to be judged by your sexual orientation…quit flaunting it in the face of everyone in society…Listen closely….the VAST MAJORITY of us DON’T GIVE A HOOT…shut up already. You, the gay community, are causing alot of the anti gay feelings that the fringe of society reacts against, by continually flaunting who you sleep with. Once more WE DON’T CARE. BC! The Gospel that contains the words of Jesus, say absolutely nothing negative about Gays or Lesbians. This should be enough for thoughtful “Christians” to pause and wonder what the big deal is if Jesus never once spoke one word about it. If Jesus did not find the love between two people of the same sex offensive, then one must ask why it creates such a problem for some fundamentalist religious people. Clearly, we are really dealing with their discomfort, insecurity and fear.
By the way: Jesus did repeatedly criticize those who were self righteous and condeming of others. Also he did mention divorce. Matt5:32
Jesus did talk about His ministry to bring the ostracized and marginalized from the outside into God’s Fold. Luke 4:18
Jeus did violate the mainstream religious laws of his time as well.
Jesus did not say or even emply anywhere in the Gospels that a person’s sexuality or sexual orientation was in any way a factor in his or her relationship to God. John 3:16 (I’m including in the whosoever!)
Get Educated before you start condeming anyone. If you don’t support the cause “Move On.”

Bottom line - The term marriage was taken from the bible and does mean between a Man and Woman. That is why there is a big fight - how come there has not been a push for civil union which has the same rights but a different name.
I remember when this issue first became a hot topic doing some research and found out that conservative Christians would support civil unions by about 75% versus 15% for gay marriage.
I don’t think most people care about the rights as much as the terms.
Question to all the gay people why do push for the term marriage over civil union?

50 or 100 years from now, when society is more enlightened and advanced and accordingly more accepting of their fellow humans, people will read the homophobic comments of our day, such as those on this forum, and wonder how people could be so hateful. When posting your comments on this and similar forums, you are creating a permanent historical record that will be viewed by historians and others to represent the sentiment of Atlanta-area residents in the year 2008. God did not intend for man to be with man or woman to be with woman and you have no right asking for anything that goes against the Bible. please don’t call me a hater or homophobe because i am not. i simply believe that the bible is the law and you are seriously breaking it.

I could care less if others are gay. I could also care less if others are not. I just don’t want it ‘rubbed in my face’. Gay people often seem to make EVERYTHING revolve around the fact they are gay. Get over it. EVERYTHING is not about the fact heteros are not gay anymore than the fact that some are. Others preference for what happens in the bedroom is just not my concern.
As a business owner, I can tell you it would seriously anger me if people took off because they are straight or gay. What does that have to do with anything? That is just an excuse to miss a day of work at my expense. Calling in Gay should cause people to lose their job - just like calling in not Gay. Bad reason to miss a day of work.

I mean don’t get me wrong i don’t approve of Homosexuality, but its not up to me to decided if they have the right to or not! There is only two people they have to answer to and that is theirself and god. Why don’t we stop focusing so much on what others are doing and focus on ourselves. It is presumptous to think that people’s view of homosexuality would have change in the next 50 or 100 years. In the next 50 or 100 years, people will still have opposing views on lifestyles, religion and so forth. Look at race relations in this country or across the world. Fifty years after civil rights legislation, there are many who believe people of color are an inferior to others.

Just because many Georgians have different (more conservative) opinions and values than you do, that doesn’t make them “ignorant.” Calling people who disagree with you “ignorant” says a lot more about your tolerance level (or lack thereof) than anything else.
I could care less what consenting adults do behind closed doors but I’m getting tired of the gay community beating me over the head with this. I will never vote “yes” to allowing homosexual “marriage,” no matter how much you protest or how many times you fail to show up to work and make me cover for you.
I’d suggest you aim for “civil unions.” That would, technically, give you all the rights you demand but would not infringe upon the “sanctity” of marriage.

Actually, the Bible does speak against homosexuality in at least two places. I will give you one: the book of Jude, first chapter beginning at the 5th verse reads “I desire to remind you, despite your knowing all things once for all time, that Jehovah (God), although he saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed those not showing faith and the angels that did not keep their original position but forsook their own proper dwelling place he has reserved with eternal bonds under dense darkness for the judgment of the great day. So too Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them, after they in same manner as the foregoing ones had committed fornication excessively and gone out after flesh for unnatural use (man with man and woman with woman) are placed before us as a warning example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire.” The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah is where the those who participated in perverse sexual acts (men with men and women with women and men and women with animals)and God destroyed them. If you read your scripture and get a clear understanding you will come to know where this sexual perversion originated from. It is not genetic or hereditary. It is a perverse spirit!

Wow, what sore losers the gay folks in Cali are. Had the prop been defeated, and the opposition protested, you would have called them sore losers, gay bashers and whatnot. Marriage is between 1man/1woman, that is it. It is what the people of the USA have stated! Please do not use activist judges to settle these issues, leave it up to the PEOPLE!!

This really should sum up the whole Bible debate. This is a line from a very famous West Wing clip.
“I’m interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She’s a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be?
While thinking about that, can I ask another? My chief of staff, Leo McGarry, insists on working on the sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is it OK to call the police?
Here’s one that’s really important cuz we’ve got a lot of sports fans in this town. Touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point?
Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side-by-side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?
Think about those questions, would you?

I think many people have totally missed the point. The point of “calling in gay” was to show just how much gay people participate in the world, and how there would be a gap if gays were not in society, just like anyone else. Gays go to work, pay taxes, etc., just like anyone else. To the person who said gays are mostly in political and entertainment industries apparently has no idea. Gays teach our kids, heal the sick, defend your rights, and defend our country just like many straight people. It is disappointing to see all the ignorance and hate…especially over a topic that is nobody else’s business. Tell me, those who disapprove, how would allowing the lesbian or gay couple next door to have their civil rights (i.e., to be next-of-kin, to function together, etc.) really hurt you?

This whole thing is utterly pathetic. Homosexuals deservedly lost ANOTHER vote in liberal Kalifornia and have been screeching about it ever since.
I am a very secular politically conservative agnostic. I have NO respect for asinine religious dogma, but I respect the right of folks to believe whatever they want — so long as the actual beliefs are logically and rationally examined.
The hilarious thing is that it was staunchly liberal voting blacks in CA who made the glorious defeat possible, yet the cowardly homosexuals ONLY attack their soft (white) target religious opponents, physically and politically. Knocking crosses out of old ladies arms and anonymously sending threatening white powder envelopes to certain (white) churches. They say and do NOTHING to the 70% of blacks who sensibly voted down the warped notion of “homosexual marriage”.
The more shrill homosexuals have the unmitigated gall to attempt to equate homosexual marriage with the vile Jim Crow laws. Such moral and intellectual dishonesty is so typical of enervated lefties.
As for calling in homosexual? Anyone who does this in my business today will be fired on the spot, with as little payoff as is legally permissible.
The country is SICK AND TIRED of homosexuals trying to force folks to accept whatever they demand. Tolerance and civil unions to ensure reasonable ‘legal’ equality is one thing. Forced acceptance and so called homosexual marriage is anathema to clear thinking folks!!!

Cordesia; Yes, this is mentioned in the “Old Testament”. However, the tenets of “Christianity” are found in the “New Testament”. This is what separates “Christians” from Jews. Because of “Jesus”, who supposedly died for your sins, all of the “Old Testament” laws were overthrown. The “lamb of god” was a blood sacrifice for all of your sins, thereby negating the old laws.
As a Buddhist, I find it enormously humorous watching “christians” distort the words of the person whom they base their religion on.

Many understand their argument but disagree with the way they are choosing today to make their point. If the intent is to show that they are contributing members of society by removing themselves one day from their job is somewhat hypocritical. Who will pay attention to this one-day stance but employers whose production is lower or employees who have to fill in for them. If they are going to remove themselves from employment for one day, why not all places in the communities. Stay home. Do not drive your cars, ride buses, go to stores, look at TV, use the internet. Do nothing as if you do not exist, as you will be doing today.

BC - Your poor children. You’re teaching them fiction. Adam & Eve are fiction. You really think 2 people just magically came to Earth and populated it? Let’s just say they did. Adam and Eve would have children and those children would procreate? Um, when have brothers and sisters been able to procreate and not have medical problems? Or did that not start to later on? If there’s an Adam and Eve, then you’re related to everyone. GAYS, BLACKS, HOMELESS PEOPLE and everyone else you hate. But alas, you’re not related because this world is inhabited with people because of EVOLUTION NOT CREATIONISM or whatever that fictional phrase is. Be logical. Just because your pastor tells you there’s an Adam & Eve doesn’t make it so. The phrase “Ignorance is Bliss” is used often. It’s a horrible phrase. I am a Christian and you so called Christians use religion to be little people when they don’t conform. God created all of us in his image and we are all different. If you Christians would learn to love others that are not the same as you; this world would be a better place. Or on Judgment Day someone just might pass you in line. God is Love and What Would Jesus DO? I know he would not turn his back on any man or say some of the cruel things that have been said in this blog. Christians are so quick to tell others where they are going in the afterlife but they may need to take time to check their reservations because it might not be to the destination of choice. Here’s something to think about: The whole foundation of your belief system is based on a fairy-tale. Do you honestly believe that god created the universe in 7 days? Do you honestly believe that god “created” us for his pleasure? I can’t think of anything more narcissistic than a god who “creates” humans to be his play-toys. Who expects us to submit to him totally, and is vengeful and hateful towards us if we don’t.
I have no doubt that a man named Jesus lived over 2000 years ago and had some amazing teachings. However, the rest of this has to be made up. You can’t really believe all of this mumbo-jumbo can you? If you do, then I only have one thing to say to you….Baaaaaa

Browneyes,
The Bible DOES denounce homosexuality as follows:
Leviticus 18:22: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”
Leviticus 20:13: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
Judges 19:24: Even Sodom, in his sinfulness, was willing to give us his daughters to other men, but stated “But to this man, don’t do such a disgraceful thing.”
Romans 1:26-27: “Because of this (sexual impurity in verse 24) God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”
The study notes for Romans 1:26-27 state: “Homosexual practice is sinful in God’s eyes. The Old Testament also condemns the practice.”
My quotes are taken directly from the New International Version (NIV).
In summary, Browneyes is twisting the gospel to suit her preferences. She is correct that we should not judge others. However, homosexuality is clearly wrong, as indicated in the above verses.

Along other more serious problems, gays have a huge PR problem.
First, they stage disgusting parades in major metros wearing disgusting sexually perverted costumes—yet claim they are just like everybody else. (All decent people and children should take cover.) “Everybody else” doesn’t engage in such behavior. I never heard a gay person speak out against such behavior either.
Second, as evidenced in this blog, they claim to want “tolerance” but exhibit theirs by bashing Christians, Christianity, Almighty God, and religious people in general. You may not like what the Bible says about homosexuality, why Sodom and Gomorrah were totally destroyed, etc., but your argument is not with Christians but with the Sovereign God.
Personally, I wouldn’t want to argue with Him.
Third, this “call in gay” day simply underscores the fact that you indeed are not like everyone else. Guess what: we already knew.

The bible does not condone homosexuality any more than it condones any other sin (adultry, fornication, stealing,etc.). The answer is the same for all: Christ, repentance, turning from the sin.
NEW TESTAMENT Reading for Today:
Romans 1:21-27 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Gay. Some Newborns are born with two sets of genitalia. The Doctor has to make a choice. (to snip, or not to snip). Then, hormonal tides, hymnal tithes, and him/her towels are supposed to shape the outcome of the individual as a man or woman. This system has worked well so far, and it forms the basis for every panty raid in every college dorm in the country (for the last twenty seven years).
Gay. I have eight brothers and sisters. Two are gay. I dont love them any less, and I dont presume to judge them. I’m content to let judgement day inform me.
Meanwhile, I enjoy my family. We are a good family and a big family with countless grandkids, still living grandparents, and very fat aging baby boomers.
Havent we persecuted each other enough? Lets pick a new thing to hate over. Skin color is out. Sex is out. How about this unjustified war in Iraq?

Second, as evidenced in this blog, they claim to want “tolerance of their religious views” but have no problem, imposing their religious mythology on secular laws.
By the way, any true Biblical scholar will tell you that the lesson of Sodom and Gamorrah had to do with the lack of hospitality, not homosexuality. Not that anyone intelligent believes any of that bible garbage anyway.

On the one hand we have the usual dogmatic religious NUTTERS spewing the usual empty, unsupported religious assertion drivel. On the other we have the shrill homosexuals and their leftist apologists hysterically demanding tolerance in the face of their often quite rabid intolerance.
The bible and the koran are man made drivel, culled ENTIRELY from previous religious drivel/myth and legend. Which often contradicts actual scientific facts and logic. With often garbled (self serving) versions of ancient history thrown in to better serve the grasping clerical types.
THE FOLKS - including 70% of blacks, a truly awkward fact that the more screechy homosexuals always dishonestly ignore - VOTED NO IN KALIFORNIA!!
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!
So called homosexual marriage is a disgusting attempt to undermine marriage, a pretty noble institution that has existed for thousands of years among normal folks who fully understand its between a man and a woman. Marriage was an entrenched social building block for normal folks long before the dogmatic papists arrogantly and arbitrarily decreed in the very appropriately named Dark Ages that divorce was “illegal” and a sin etc.

Stating that people who vehemently oppose homosexuals are gays themselves is short-sighted and/or slanted. People have strong opinons about several controversial issues, which were they learned from parents, society, religious beliefs, personal convictions and so forth. Many times beliefs are not formed from fear but from informed and uniformed informations/opinions.

Marriage is more than simply sexual parts. Parts fitting or not fitting is not the issue. Marriage is a committment between two individuals who vow to share the good and bad times and take care of one another. Employers and insurance companies will not allow benefits to partners unless they are Married. This is true for all partners caring for one another: siblings, cousins, heterosexuals in states without common-law. Marriage is necessary for benefits! I can vow to love my partner forever, but I also want to look out for the benefits I can provide.

@ people who think you can voting NO to prop 8 settles the issue.
I’m sure few if any of you have read the California constitution, the Georgia constitution, or the US constitution, but in the specific case of prop 8 in california, whether they vote yes or no the proposition and it’s predecessor and most laws like these are blatantly unconstitutional. You can’t deny civil rights based on your feelings about something. The 1st amendment of our bill of rights says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” The only caveat on that right is if the exercise of that religion is harming the rights of another and clearly they are not harming anyone’s rights by getting married. If you honestly believe they are, well.. you are probably too weak to exist on this planet and I pity you. Let me put it to you like this. If a majority of people weren’t christian and you were (as so many of you delightfully claim to be) and they decided that christians couldn’t marry, couldn’t adopt children, or that they couldn’t practice their religion or live a life according to christian ideals (most of you wouldn’t have any issue on that one because it wouldn’t affect you anyway) how would you like it? I’m sorry so many of you don’t appreciate the rights our constitution affords us and I’m annoyed that more of you don’t understand how the three branches of government check and balance each other, but these days I really can’t fault you for that. This would be a much better nation is people minded their own business and let others live their lives.

Hmm…at first glance, some of the comments were disappointing. Now, they are hilarious. Some of today’s posters have not only demonstrated their bigotry, but they’ve also demonstrated how much they do NOT know about the gay community. This board reflects why the general public has no business voting on who is allowed to visit me when I’m dying in the hospital, who I have the right to love, or who I am allowed to live my life with…legally.

I don’t buy the argument that gays are being denied equal rights. Gays have the same right that everyone else has, the right to marry a person opposite-sex. I, as a heterosexual don’t have the right to marry a female, so what equal rights are being denied?
By chuck

Marriage is a contract; to disallow same sex couples the right to marriage is unconstitutional (period). If you wanted to protect marriage, you should have done that already. Shall we look to Abraham, the great patriarch, who slept with his servant when he discovered his beloved wife Sarah was infertile? Or to Jacob, who fathered children with four different women (two sisters and their servants)? Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon and the kings of Judah and Israel. Jesus himeself was single and preached an indifference to earthly attachments—especially family. The apostle Paul (also single) regarded marriage as an act of last resort for those unable to contain their animal lust. “It is better to marry than to burn with passion,” says the apostle, in one of the most lukewarm endorsements of a treasured institution ever uttered.
Last but not least, we are a democracy, not a theocracy. The laws that I follow should allow for a contractual agreement for marriage, if you want to keep us from getting married then keep gay men and women out of your churches, that’s the christian thing to do. Sound crazy? Exactly!

Romans is in the NEW Testament! Take a minute to read Gman’s “New Testament Reading for Today”.
I have gay neighbors who are good neighbors. We are friendly with each other.
My wife and I explain to our kids, who have asked why the two guys “do not have a mommy” at home, that homosexuality (nothing obscene) is wrong. We also explain that my brother-in-law’s smoking and sometimes heavy drinking, and other sins, including some of our own, are wrong.
I have also worked with gay coworkers from other offices of my company. Nobody flaunts it; everyone just gets the job done. Keep your personal sexual affairs where they belong - at home!

Heather, marriage has always been a contract. Initially it wasn’t between a man and a woman but a man and a woman’s father. It was a business arrangement or a strategic alliance between families. The concept of marrying for love is a relatively recent development. As far as I can tell the religious attachments to marriage come from wanting them to bless the contract (which let’s face it, the church used to bless everything, business arrangements, soldiers in battle, ships, buildings.. it was a revenue stream for them, like selling artifacts or taking tithes) and make it holy holy so it’d have more value to those living out the contract. If it were more than a contract at its very core then a justice of the peace wouldn’t be able to carry them out and you wouldn’t have to get a license to do it.

Gays are gay because they “feel” gay.
I “feel” other wrong and immoral desires - but I obstain from them because I read the bible and believe what is says about how I should behave. Love thy neighbor (treat them with respect) but is also says to call sin ..sin and I just did.

Lev. 18:22 states the principle: “You [masculine] shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination” (NRSV). The second (Lev. 20:13) adds the penalty: “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.”
Jesus said he did NOT come to CHANGE the law.

The holy sanctity of marriage is between a man and a women. this is what the folks against gay marriage say. they say God and the Bible intended marriage to be between and a man and a woman. But HE also said til death do you part. why when we look to religion and the bible do you only quote the parts that pertain to you. if you want to preserve marriage then dont allow divorce. you allow celebs and others to marry people they have only known for 24 hours but if someone is with a person of the same sex for 15 years they cannot marry and have the same rights. i know someone who married his sisters friend so her kids could have insurance. they dont live together they are not in love yet they have the “right” to marry. Is this what God intended? STOP THE HATRED AND BIGOTRY

Being gay or not is a choice. It doesn’t warrant any special concessions. Being gay is immoral, and has already been judged by GOD himself! If you want to be gay so be it, but don’t try to justify a perversion that will be severely punished (Sodom and Gomorrah). There is a difference between being treated fairly, and being forced to tolerate open perversions. If you stay in the closet, you won’t have problems like this one. Anybody with a conscience of decency would avoid a deviant. If you come out of the closet, you are shouting loud to the world that you are freaky. Move to _ollywood, you’d fit in.

From a legal agrument, I don’t see how the laws and amendments to the states’ constitutions are valid. I also don’t believe it should be left up to the people to vote on this type of issue, it should be up to the courts.
If you replace “gay” with “red-heads”: It shall be against the state constitution to allow red-heads to marry. (I know that is not how the law reads, but something to that affect)
I think we would all agree that red-heads are people too and deserve the same opportunities to a state marriage license as everyone else. State licenses and privledges provided have nothing to do with religion.
A person is smart, a mob is not, and mob mentality is at its best when issues such as these are put forth for a vote.

If you replace “redheads” with sheep it would make even more sense. But again, soon the beast lovers will want equal rights too! Man & sheep, woman & dog how special. After reading most of the tripe written here, it appears that the gays & gay lovers insist everyone believe as they do, to like them etc….if you don’t, you are wrong, a hater, a bigot. Funny, I thought we lived in America where opinions are allowed? Of course, we are rapidly becoming a police state and we all must believe the same thing all the time or be damned. Hey….in these times with the Economies health, if they want to take the chance of losing employment and finding work somewhere else…..go for it ! My problem is not acknowledging there behavior as normal and accepted, because it more than likely never will be by a majority. Let me say I have known, and have several friends that are gay/lesbian in my past. And I don’t have a problem with it…..only because as I have told them, that leaves more woman for me : )
Now with that said, my BIGGEST gripe is when the “gay men” try to Convince me that I am “really gay”, and just haven’t accepted it yet….WTF ?….that I have a BIG problem with. Because Nothing gives me more satisfaction (Did I say nothing?) than making a woman im attracted too……pull the headboard off the wall with joy !

You’re too sensitive. I’m a gay male, in a relationship for 19 years, have 9 siblings…two others are gay, 7 gay nephews and nieces, and I’m a republican. Oh yeah and I have two gay wiener dogs!
I don’t need a piece a paper to state, I’m married. I do need a law that will give me every financial benefit that a “married couple” receives.
The way to make a point for the gay community is via finance…not calling into work. If every gay person pulled their assets from the economy for ONE month…it would make everyone to take notice.
Being independent is power. We’ve been blessed financially both having good corporate jobs, starting our own business so we can retire before turning 55 in five years, and owning two homes. We are blessed.
Everyone should live their lives to the fulliest, love everyone equally no matter their views and treat everyone with respect.
Everyone won’t see eye to eye…I know this personally as I only speak to 4 out of my 9 siblings…none of the 4 are gay siblings. I don’t say bad things about anyone…I choose who I want in my life and live my life to the best of my ability.
Do onto others, as you would want others to do onto you. Life would be so simple if the hate could stop.

I am a straight mother of a gay son. I watched him grow, and I now know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that God made him that way. He suffered through middle school and still has to deal with people who mock him and discriminate against him because he is gay. Why? He is a wonderful person; smart, funny, strong and kind. He does not deserve to go through life without a partner that society recognizes as his own.
Yes, there are differences between racism and homophobia, but there are many things we learned from the civil rights movement that apply here as well. One is that the concept of “separate but equal” simply does not wash. The very fact of having separate rules for blacks and whites, even if they WERE equal, is wrong. In the same way, separate rules for partnered couples, even if they are equal,is also wrong. It sends the message that a minority group is not worthy to be included with the rest of society. It breaks my heart to see my wonderful son treated this way.
It makes me really sad to see the cruel jokes on this blog about “flower arranging and hair dressing.” Don’t you see that this is the point of the “call in gay” day? To point out that there are gay people that work in every kind of job. To raise awareness that gay people are your neighbors, your coworkers, and yes, your family.
One day you may be called upon to support a gay child in your own family. I hope that you will then understand that there is no one to blame. I strongly believe that one day people will realize that we are all God’s children and deserving of respect, no matter our race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or country of origin. Until that day comes, I will do what I can not to judge others for things they cannot control, and be as kind as I can be.

The point is that weather or not you believe in the gay lifestyle, or if you think it is sin, or if you think they are freaks - your OPINION should not prevent others from enjoying the same privledges that we hetero’s enjoy.
You have every right to your opinion, and every right to express that opinion through the 1st amendment. The line is drawn when your opinion negatively affects others.

First, I can’t see how it can be anything but counterproductive…especially after reading the reactions of some of you people. Regardless of the valid point that they are trying to get across, they are only bringing ridicule upon themselves.
Second, please don’t start quoting the Bible to me. If you’re going to decide that you want to live your life by the Bible, then fine…but don’t try to shove it down someone else’s throat. And, if it is an important enough document that it is worth quoting it to prove a point, then obviously the entire document should be followed, and you are not allowed to cherry-pick which scriptures should be followed in order to match your opinions.
So, of course it’s ok to have slaves(Leviticus 25:44-46 ). And women better be quiet and submissinve in church (Corinthians 14:34-35 ). Nothing wrong with rape as long as you pay the father and then marry the girl (Deuteronomy 22:28-29)…though of course if she doesn’t report it, she really should be stoned (Deuteronomy 22:23-24). Etc. etc.
Oh, and by the way, unless there were some strange family relations going on, just how did the Earth get populated after Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel & Seth? (I am going to resist the obvious Southern inbreeding joke here…although the results of that would certainly explain some of the opinions in these comments.)
So, anyway…keep your beliefs, but don’t force them on other people. Especially when you don’t even follow your own doctrine completely.

Thanks “loving mom”!!!
One of my sister’s would try to keep her daughter and son from us gay siblings, so THEY wouldn’t be taught how to be gay. I said back then, God will punish her. Both of her children are gay and she’s now a very loving mother to both and a loving sister to me.
God didn’t punish her, he showed her his path for her children as he will show EVERYONE that HE has the wisdom for all.

well I think my husband might be gay, that’s why I’m so damn angry! Why did god do this to me!! Why did my husband decide to be gay!! Is it me??**
Your husband did not “decide” to be gay. Many gay people have married to hide what they really feel just because of unaccepting people like you. They feel they cannot be who they really are because of persecution and ridicule.
Maybe God (if you believe him like you say you do, you would know to capitalize his name) is trying to teach you acceptance instead of bigotry.

Ask Vermont and Massachussetts what kind of horrible things are happening since they started allowing gay marriage….like fewer episodes of violent crime and more home purchases. Oh, the horror.
America will look back on this treatment of homosexuals the same way we look back on segregation. We will be ashamed of ourselves.
I do have to agree, however, that economic protests do not work. There should be rioting in the streets that gay people aren’t allowed to live their lives just like everyone else.
There is too much going on in the world to be worried about the “abomination” that is gay marriage. The auto industry bailout is an abomination. The travesty in Darfur is an abomination. Gay marriage is a simple thing that, if allowed, would save a lot of time and trouble (so much money has been wasted fighting for and against it).
By the way, please don’t quote your Bible at me. The last time I checked, I still lived in America, where I have no obligation to abide by biblical laws (even if I do live in Georgia).
Reading these hateful posts makes it abundantly clear that being 48th out of 50 states in the nation in education standards really does make a difference.

I say we do away with special rights. Like marriage for heterosexuals. It is a government sanctioned privilege for a bunch of people who promise to love each other until death then go out and cheat on each other and get divorced. And they often eat shellfish, which is an abomination in God’s eyes (it’s in the Bible).

While often the Bible is cited as saying being gay is wrong (Leviticus 18:22 and Leviticus 20:13), there are a number of other verses which are largely ignored but would ultimately result in burning in Hell:
“For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him.” (Leviticus 20:9)
So all of you who ever talked back to your parents, you’re going to Hell.
“If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people.” (Leviticus 20:18)
Ever had sex with your wife (or trick) during her period? You’re going to Hell.
“Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.” (Leviticus 25:44-45)
Funny how we’ve banned slavery, but the Bible says it’s OK. I don’t see anyone running on a platform for re-instituting slavery!
“Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.” (Leviticus 19:27)
Why aren’t you out protesting hair salons, scissor factories, and even our own military? Buzz cuts mean they’re all going to Hell too.
“…and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.” (Leviticus 11:7)
Let’s go protest BBQ joints!
“…do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material.” (Leviticus 19:19)
All of the farmers who plant more than one crop, they’re going to burn too.
“But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you.” (Leviticus 11:10) “They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination.” (Leviticus 11:11) “Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you.” (Leviticus 11:12)
Why aren’t you protesting Red Lobster instead of gay marriage?
**The above exercise proves that anti-gay fundamentalists selectively quote the Bible. They enthusiastically and openly embrace those parts of the Bible which affirm and justify their own personal, pre-existing prejudice against gay people, while declining to become as enthusiastic about verses like the ones listed above.
After all, how many times have you heard a fundamentalist say that eating shellfish was an abomination? But they sure don’t hesitate to say it about gay people, do they? What does that tell you?**

“What about the simple word NO do you not understand. I voted for McCain for President but his suporters are not out protesting against Obama. The people have spoken. Marriage is defined as a covenant between a Man and a Woman. If the gays want civil unions, so be it, but Marriage is already defined. End of story, so let’s move on.”
The same thing blacks didn’t understand about it when they were told “No, you can’t eat in this restaurant.” No is not the end of the discussion when what you’re saying no to is equal treatment for all members of society. You say “The people have spoken” but “the people” don’t get to violate a minority’s right to equal protection. And maybe gays will accept civil unions as “end of story” when civil unions bring with them every single right, privilege and benefit that marriage does, including federal recognition and portability among all fifty states.

When do we get “Call in Menopausal Day”? I believe every group has the same rights as others and if I’m sweating because of hot flashes, the air needs to be ON, I don’t care if it’s 30 degrees outside! I’m also entitled to my wild mood swings because that’s part of who I am and if I eat your chocolate, it’s because I can’t control myself from the menopausal cravings for it. My true belief for this so -called day is the same as when policepersons take off for the “Blue Flu”. There are better ways of getting your point across than to miss a day of work without pay - ESPECIALLY in THESE economic times when too many are jobless and would be glad to have money for one days pay.

Geez…the AJC sure knows how to get people to keep coming to their site…just put the word “gay” in a blog and the nuts come out of the woodworks.
I’m gay…I’m at work (I’m just taking a break right now :) ).
All of my gay friends are at work.
In fact I don’t know of anyone that laid out of work because of this.
Most of the blogs about it have crickets chirping..except this one.
You know, just because some gay people got this idea in the news doesn’t mean we are all doing it like sheep.
First of all it’s a bad idea…doesn’t accomplish anything in the places where people are the most intolerant because those places have few gay citizens anyway.
Also, being exclusionary is hardly the way to make society see us as inclusive.
And as some have posted here…the economic timing is not really poised to gain any sympathy for anyone toying with their own employment.
Just a few points…most of us don’t see the struggle for gay rights as equivalent to THE struggle for civil rights fought by african americans.
That doesn’t mean we don’t have A civil rights struggle.
As to whether being gay is a choice or not..I don’t know how anyone would defend the argument that someone chooses who they are attracted to. Sure, it is a choice to act on it, but most of us struggled with that for years before we actually did anything. Frankly, I’m glad I did..I’ve been very happy the last 17 years from my “choice”.

If the theory of evolution is true and we are here to procreate and the traits of the “fittest” are passed on through their greater ability to do this, how come there are still gays if it is not a choice. Wouldn’t that human trait have become extint by now due to gays inability to procreate?
Also, the ones who say God created them gay because they are attracted to other men naturally must think that murderers are born that way too so it is ok. All are tempted and all are tempted in different ways by different things, why is it ok for you to give into your tempatation to sin as it is defined in the bible. Just as many men have the temptation to have several sexual partners and sleep with every good looking girl they see, it is still not ok. Your wanting to do something does not mean that that something must be ok.

In a push for “mainstream” status/acceptance, the Sodomites (& their Marxist enablers) hijacked the word “gay”, just as they did the “rainbow”. In addition, they refer to their aggressive demands for special privileges as “rights” to in order draw similarities to civil rights, veteran’s rights, women’s rights, etc. This is done to draw sympathy from the general populace. It’s all part of a marketing/propaganda angle by these untermenschen to further downgrade American values & society.

This has got to be the most absurd and ridiculous thing I have heard of. A day without a “gay” would be the most wonderful thing to occur; our country could finally move forward the way it should. People that are “gay”; choose to be so; you cannot choose your skin color or your ethnicity. Stop trying to compare your “issue” with that of civil rights as the two have nothing in common! The people of California made a statement loud and clear; and for once I’m proud of them for embracing the truth and moving forward!!

You cannot say the same for me. You’re not gay so you don’t know and will never know. There is no physical way you can know because you’re straight. I’m gay and it is not a choice. I was born this way, just as you were born straight. I have been this way since I was a little kid. Just because you say something, it doesn’t make it true unless you have proof. As a Christian, I have an opposing view to gay marriage. (I’m sure other bloggers will present several rebuttals…just remember, their views & opinions may not necessarily reflect those of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ or even mine.) As a Black/African American, as a woman, as a human & as an American, I believe people should be able to ask for what they want & stand up for themselves until they get it. Doesn’t mean every one will agree with them or that they’re right in their beliefs, but at least they’re courageous enough to stand up. The laws stated Blacks were less than human & women were subservient so we were viewed as asking wanting too much. I thank my GOD daily that the civil rights’ pioneers, the women’s movement innovators, etc. had the courage stand & remain persistent for they wanted…despite the hate groups that used violence & intimidation to discourage them. (Prejudice against Blacks, Jews, Catholics, immigrants & homosexuals is very common.) Again, I’m a Christian, but if I would’ve known there was a “reason” to take the day off, I would’ve called in gay myself (any reason to get some much needed sleep!).

Brian, I OPPOSE gay marriage because (1) I’m a Christian who believes the Bible is GOD’s instructions & I choose to submit to his commands even if I don’t agree with them and (2) because homosexuality has an affect on me & my children as members of society. For instance: the unmarried heterosexual who engages in unmarried sex then tries to force me to accept his lover as part of the family, come over to their lovenest, be involved in their kid’s life, force their public displays of affection on me just because I happen to be standing there & teach my child that premarital sex is okay. U get me? What you do in the privacy of your own home & don’t force society to accept for your convenience is your business. But when you begin to inflict pain on me, I have to stand up for myself to let you know you are crossing my boundaries. That’s why I oppose it & will do it openly & lawfully…to stand up for my own rights & the rights of my children. Just like non-smokers had to stand up & tell smokers not to smoke around them because the smoke is affecting the non-smokers (the smell, 2nd hand smoking, toxins, possible disease). So laws were created to set some boundaries. That’s all. I don’t care if the smoker was born that way or not. His rights stop where mine begin.
BC, don’t be blinded, sweetie. One of the smartest things Satan/the devil has done is convince people he doesn’t exist. The other is convince people that GOD is in control of everything. GOD is not the one “causing” everything to happen. GOD gave men/people dominion on the Earth…meaning we are in charge of controlling the atmosphere. GOD is trying to help us; Satan is trying to stop us. People need to decide who to listen to or be guided by so they can get to the desired destination. The only thing I can say is this is what your husband chooses to do. The signs were probably there before marriage, but he did his best to hide them or you overlooked them. (“Why” is irrelevant…why he hid them or why you overlooked them, doesn’t matter.) Problem is the truth is coming out…and I guess so is he. One thing I’ve learned is that a man cheats because he wants to…and most times, it has NOTHING to do with his wife/girlfriend. Sweetie, let him go, stop blaming yourself & move forward with your life.

Firstly, I would like to kindly ask people to argue with logic, not emotions here. If we merely sling insults at one another, we will achieve nothing and fail to see each others’ points and arguments properly.
Secondly, as I see it, the fundamental genesis of our disagreement is in a dispute over religion. What I have seen many people on this forum express is that Christianity regards homosexuality as evil. Perhaps that is true. Perhaps Christianity does say that. Such matters are open to individual interpretation, as are all matters of faith.
Those things that do not allow for individual interpretation, however, are the principles upon which our nation and government were founded, Lockean principles stating that the government must represent the will of the majority while never ceasing to protect the rights of the minority. The majority may pass whatever legislation it sees fit so long as it does not infringe upon the fundamental, natural rights of any minority group within the state.
Here in the USA, homosexuals are a minority group that, according to Locke, must be protected by the government and must be granted equal rights and protection to all other citizens. As the majority of Americans are free to marry whomever they so desire and love, so too should homosexuals.
Perhaps you believe that homosexuality is wrong. Perhaps you would not choose to accept your own sexual orientation if you were gay, but whatever you hold spiritually true for yourself, you cannot enforce such beliefs upon another member of society these beliefs remove fundamental rights, which you daily enjoy, from the minority.
Furthermore, even if you choose to disregard my argument about Locke and the rights of minorities, I will approach the debate from a Christian perspective so that I can begin from the same page as those people with whom I disagree and see if I can persuade them, you, to share my interpretation of the Christian faith.
Are there passages in the Bible that criticize homosexuality? Perhaps. Once again, individual interpretation is at play here. But what is more fundamental, intrinsic, and valuable to Christianity: one or two passages written by men who followed Jesus, or the general religious principles laid out by Jesus himself?
I would argue, I suppose you could disagree, that the fundamental principles of Jesus’ preaching are more important than passages written by those who followed and attempted to interpret Him. If you step back and regard the spirit of Christianity, the main message, the whole idea, you will see a religion based upon a principle of love. More than anything else, Jesus taught compassion, love, and acceptance of all people. Do you think Jesus would regard homosexuals as less than any other people? Do you think he would refuse them rights that he would grant others? Surely not. Surely, such a man, a son of God, would see beyond this pettiness and recognize people as whole, unique individuals, not mere cardboard cutouts defined by stereotypes and sexual orientations. Surely, he would accept these people exactly as they are, and he would allow them to love and marry whomever they wished.
So, please, be you homophobic, against gay rights, or against gay marriage in any way, carefully consider whichever of my above arguments appeals to you most, that of John Locke or that of Jesus Christ, and understand that a person ought to have certain fundamental rights within a society, and that the right to love and to marry whomever one so chooses is one of these inalienable rights to be granted to all people, heterosexuals and homosexuals alike.
Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long and wordy response. I hope that at least a few dissenters will seriously consider what I have written and question their deeply held prejudices. At the least, I hope I have made you think.

BC, your comment about not seeing any gay animals is absolutely 100% inaccurate. Maybe you haven’t seen any personally just like you probably have never seen a public school classroom. Here a just a few examples of some research done on GAY animals.
“JERUSALEM — The London newspaper The Independent reports that a pair of gay vultures at the Jersualem Zoo have shown the world just how talented and caring gay adoptive parents can be.”
Homosexual and bisexual behavior are widespread in the animal kingdom: a 1999 review by researcher Bruce Bagemihl shows that homosexual behavior, has been observed in close to 1500 species, ranging from primates to gut worms, and is well documented for 500 of them.
“virtually every bonobo chimpanzees are bisexual, which may also indicate that sexuality, may simply act as a form of social bonding for animals, other than the singular view of procreation as purported by conservatives.”

What happened to the “moderation” on this post? It is never ok to spew hatred, no matter what direction it is in. Let’s keep the discussion relevant, and stop attacking individuals and/ or groups of people.

I just found this blog and I can’t believe I actually started to read it. I can’t believe how hateful people can be. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. Of course you’re not though, because you’re hiding behind your computer. Come down to Midtown, stand on the corner of 10th and Piedmont and repeat everything you guys have written here. I doubt any of you would do it. Grow up already. You’re just embarassing yourselves with your ignorance.
